Market Insight

Intra-African Trade Accelerates Amid Global Trade Tensions

African nations are pushing forward with trade integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). With more active participation, intra-continental exports rose 12.4% in 2024, and the agreement is projected to lift such trade by 81% in coming years, boosting value chains, reducing dependence on external markets, and enhancing resilience.

E-Commerce & Digital Trade: Rapid Growth & Cross-Border Potential

Africa’s e-commerce market is booming, estimated to reach $46.1 billion by 2025, up from $7.7 billion in 2017, a near 500% increase. About 60% of transactions are expected to occur via mobile, powered by a rapidly expanding user base.Tech In Africa

Alongside this, cross-border digital trade is opening global doors for Africa’s small and mid-sized businesses, allowing them to scale without heavy infrastructure investment.Ruby Digital

Climate & Sustainability Shift: From Trend to Taproot

Sustainability is no longer optional, it’s central. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and green practices are reshaping African consumer behavior, investor preferences, and regulatory landscapes. Local eco-solutions, from clean energy efforts to sustainable packaging, are gaining traction.

Evolving Export Landscape: Cocoa Consolidation & Supply Chain Risk

Africa’s cocoa sector faces pressure as poor harvests in Ivory Coast and Ghana have driven prices above $12,000 per metric ton. Industry consolidation is underway, notably with Hartree Partners in talks to acquire major trader Touton, which handles around 10% of global cocoa trade.Reuters

Why This Matters for African Businesses

  • Broaden your reach: Leverage AfCFTA to access untapped African markets and reduce dependency on volatile global conditions.

  • Invest digitally: Prioritize mobile, first customer journeys, and explore global platforms for cost-effective international growth.

  • Embrace green credentials: Sustainable practices aren’t just ethical, they’re increasingly demanded by markets and investors.

  • Monitor export risks: Fluctuating commodity markets (like cocoa) emphasize the need for agility, value-added strategies, and diversification.
